Anjana Chaudhari (આંજણા ચૌધરી) are Kshatriya a class native to Rajasthan, North Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in India, they are an ethnic group, race, tribe and a people.

As described in Mr. Ramjibhai Desai’s book, “Rajasthanki Jatiya”, there are three types of Jats.

 1) Anjana Jat

 2) Puniya Jat

 3) Godara Jat

Anjana Jats migrated to Bhinmal, Marvad, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh from Rajasthan.

The Jats are identified by 3 peculiarities

 1) ASI (Sword)

 2) MASIH (Buffalo)

 3) KRUSHI (Agriculture)

Anjana predominantly inhabit along countryside and preserve their truly rich and original heritage of living up with Asi, Masih, and Krushi. Fair complexion, tall, muscular build, bright eyes, and sensitive by nature are some of the characteristics inherited in the genes of all Anjanas. Also, Anjanas are humorous, often sarcastic, kind hearted, hospitable and hard working human beings.

During the good old days in India, a class of people who possess arms always identified themseleves with suffix ‘sinh’ (lion) with their first names. Anjanas use ‘sinh’ as suffix to their first names and never hesitated to stand up for their cause and protect themselves and others. Anjanas, by nature, are outspoken.

Anjanas, traditionally, are known by 3 different last names.

 1) Chaudhari

This last name is sort of an identity stamp for Anjana community. It is widely

used in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh states.

 2) Patel, Pateol

In some regions, particularly Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, Anjanas adopted

this last name due to the fact that they are farmers by profession.

 3) Desai

During the colonial era, the ruling prince of Baroda, Maharaja Sayajirao

Gaekwad, ruled much of the north gujarat region. The ruler often awarded

the last name ‘Desai’ to the group of people who demonstrated outstanding

services to their communities. The Anjanas who got ‘Desai’ award retained

 their last name as ‘Desai’.

 Gotras:

Anjanas are further classified by their gotras. The gotras of Anjana match with the gotras of Jats. There are around 232 different gotras. Some of the gotras to name a few are:

Mahival,Atos, Aod, Akoliya, Bagla, Bhatol, Bhutadiya, Chauhan, Chavda, Del, Gujjar, Jegoda, Juva, Kaid, Kag, Korat, Kuva, Kodali, Kharsan, Kathroyiya, Katriya, Karen, Loh, Muji, Juva, Loh, Parmar Yadav etc.

Customs & Marriages:

A typical Anjana village is always outfitted with ancient Lord Shiva temple; whereas Lord Rama temple is contemporary built. Based on this observation, Anjanas, traditionally, are worshipers of Lord Shiva.

Anjana women are bold, beautiful, hardworking, thrifty and happy-go-lucky ladies. They are less educated as compared to their male counterparts; however, the gap in education is slowly evaporating.

Anjana weddings are kind of a super bowl event in planning and preparation. It’s like a woman’s day to shine. There is a famous proverb that lyrics of wedding songs sung by Anjana ladies are so loud that they can be heard from a mile.

As per strict Hindu tradition, marriages among the same gotras are prohibited, since people with the same gotras are considered to be siblings. Also, it is a common practice not to approve marriages if there is any direct blood relationship up to 7 generations between bride’s and bridegroom’s families.

Traditional attires:

Women wear colored Sari, blouse and gher valo red/black ghagaro.

Men wear zabhho, dhoti and safa as a headgear. Safa is a long piece of cloth wrapped round the head. During marriage ceremony, fathers of bride and groom often keep the safa’s tail end loosely hanging.

Stories of Bravery and Heroism:

Anjanas are naturally warlike and aggressive in battle, and possess qualities like courage, loyalty, self sufficiency, physical strength, resiliency, fighting tenacity, and military strategy.

There are numerous undocumented episodes on bravery of Anjanas. Also, women fought alongside of their men. Land of North Gujarat and Rajasthan is strewn with memorial stones marking the deaths of brave Anjanas. Here are two well known
